Itajime "Sekka" Linens & "Mame" fabric by HARISHO
Houseware linens by Harisho, the only remaining itajime master continuing in this traditional Edo period technique. Fabric is folded several times into very small strips then put in between carved
wooden boards (for mame, the boards are grooved). Perfect examples of sekka (snowflake) design and mame (beans or peas), a classically Edo pea-dot pattern most common for tenugui (hand towel).
Mame shibori fabric is made by folding two layers of cotton kimono bolt length fabric into narrow strips multiple times. it is then pleated like an accordion and pressed between wooden boards carved with grooves. While the fabric is tightly compressed between wooden boards, the entire fabric with boards is immersed in a dye. The dye travels through the grooves and touches the peaks of pleated fabric where dye disperses in a semi-circular way. When the fabric is unfolded, a complete circular dot appears similar to a bean or pea shape.
Recently, Harisho collaborated with popular Japanese fashion brand SOU.SOU, providing fabrics for their contemporary tabi collection.
